TikTok is designed for users to post and engage with short-form videos, and I believe it functions as such. After signing up, I scrolled through my “For You Page” and saw a variety of videos, including one of a teenage girl pranking her mother and one of a high school volleyball game. The app is easy to navigate, especially for adolescents who, more likely than not, have at least a baseline understanding of the Internet. Similarly, TikTok makes it simple for users to connect with their social network and share content to a variety of other platforms. In terms of strengths, TikTok is visually appealing and can be used with or without sound. In fact, TikTok has numerous accessibility features. Users with visual sensitivities can opt out of videos with flashes of light; if not, warning labels are often shown on those videos. Also, the “Text-to-speech” function converts typed text to a voiceover that plays over the text in a video, which may be helpful to users who are visually impaired or blind. For hard-of-hearing and deaf users, TikTok offers auto-captions, transcribing a video’s spoken audio into text. Lastly, although TikTok collects and uses information, users may request to know, access, correct, or delete collected information (Privacy Policy, 2023). In addition to TikTok’s strengths, I’ve discovered that certain elements of the app have both positive and negative effects on an adolescent’s experience. TikTok seems to be designed for all age groups, as the algorithm personalizes content. For example, if a ten-year-old has Roblox on his phone and talks about video games often, he will likely see Roblox content on his feed. If a middle-aged woman loves cooking and texts her friends recipes, she will likely see cooking content on her feed. TikTok is a perfect example of symbolic interaction, a relationship between the user and the media they consume; while the user shapes their feed, the media consumed impacts each user in differing ways (Laser, 2021). In this sense, TikTok is playful. However, the personalization of TikTok has potentially dangerous consequences. Many adolescents struggle with disordered eating and body image problems, and media presenting the “idealized thin woman” and “idealized muscular man” can promote lower self-esteem and body dissatisfaction (Bartlett et al., 2008). Users may find themselves viewing content that propels their struggles, like “What I eat in a day,” weight loss, or body-checking videos. Further, TikTok is very interactive, which can be positive or negative. In terms of interactivity, users can interact with their content and others’ content. They can like posts, share posts, comment on posts, and repost posts. Also, the ‘stitch’ and ‘duet’ functions that allow one user to record over another user’s post. This can be a strength; TikTok promotes socialization, as adolescents are able to communicate with a broader range of peers (Laser, 2021). In fact, research shows that youth who use social media have stronger emotional connections to others (Reich, 2010). However, the ease of interaction can be abused. Users can stitch or duet a video to make fun of another user or group, even going as far as to cyberbully and spread discriminatory beliefs. Puberty stimulates a dramatic increase in plasticity, making adolescents more attentive to the world and more easily influenced by it (Steinberg, 2014). This means that adolescents are more vulnerable and sensitive, which can be risky; being on the receiving end of harmful interaction can have a detrimental influence on an adolescent’s mental health and well-being. Similarly, adolescents seek short-term gratification, and due to TikTok’s interactivity, harmful behaviors (i.e., underage drinking and substance use) may be rewarded by other users. It is evident that TikTok has both strengths and weaknesses. However, I believe that TikTok’s weaknesses mirror those of other social media platforms. With all these factors in mind, based on Nicole Henning’s App Review Checklist and my own experience, I would rate TikTok a 4/5 for adolescent use.
